Westerholter Street

Westerholter Street 28

Christian Nienhaus has chosen a house and its architecture for his project (Westerholter Straße). He was given the opportunity to decorate a staircase with his art. Or more precisely, to turn the stairwell into a tangible, walk-in art space! Christian Nienhaus has looked into the history of the house, written to former residents and collected testimonies. He himself helped with the renovation in order to secure traces: e.g. old window frames, wallpaper remnants or newspaper documents slumbering under the wallpaper. The artist combines the found material with new materials, artistic techniques and his creative poetry, transforming the stairwell into a walk-in sculpture. So every day can be lived and experienced with art. The staircase is not so much decorated with individual art objects. Instead, Nienhaus transforms the staircase into a single, walk-in object. An art object that extends over several floors. The residents and visitors to the house become part of the artwork and can bring it to life as if by chance. Here and there, lights suddenly glow, voices whisper, shadows flit across the walls of the stairwell.
